Singing Too Much Pro Tips To Stay Vocally Healthy Suzy S. Is there such a thing as singing too much? If youre working on a rigorous singing schedule, check out these tips to stay vocally healthy from voice teacher Elaina R Anyone who’s ever eaten too much at Thanksgiving dinner knows that there is definitely too much of a good thing. This applies to singing as well! Singing, in my opinion, is one of the most enjoyable activities in the world. But just like eating too much makes you feel sick, singing too much has very real physical repercussions that can prevent you from singing more   sometimes even permanently. As a full-time professional singer, I sing a lot. I recently had a day where I had to sing for six hours. Even so, I haven’t had any vocal health problems since I was an undergraduate. Here’s why I have to be careful and what I do to keep my cords healthy. The Dangers of Singing Too Much Since your vocal cords are a part of your body, singing too much has many of the same effects as overusing any other body part. Imagine that you’ve been clapping for hours. What would happen to your hands? They would likely be red and swollen. If you kept clapping despite the swelling, your hands would eventually become very painful and develop calluses and blisters. They might even start to bleed (ouch). This same thing can happen to your vocal cords. The first step is vocal cord swelling. If you continue to sing with swollen or strained vocal cords,  you can develop nodules (calluses), polyps (blisters), or hemorrhaging (bloody cords). Treatment for these issues includes vocal rest, vocal therapy, and, in severe cases, surgery. Any of these issues, if not treated, can permanently damage your singing and speaking voice. Vocal Health  as a Singer Strained vocal cords (and damaging your voice)  may sound scary, but it can be avoided. I’m able to sing all day, every day without injury because I am constantly thinking about my vocal health. Staying healthy as a singer is much like staying healthy as an athlete, and following these rules can be the difference between a happy voice and an incapacitated one. Stay Hydrated I chug a glass of water as soon as I get up in the morning, and I carry a water bottle around with me everywhere. Hydrated vocal cords are nice and plump (and thus less prone to injury). Get Enough Sleep You don’t need me to tell you that your body functions better when you get enough sleep. Fatigue affects your vocal cords just like it affects the rest of you. Exercise Good singers have to be very in touch with their bodies, and physical exercise helps you  develop kinesthetic awareness. Exercise also helps alleviate tension, especially tension associated with sitting at a desk for long periods of time. This modern tension often centers around the throat, and throat tension is terrible for singing. Shaking your body out of this rigid mode can work wonders for your singing. Address Allergies and Acid Reflux I have seasonal allergies, so I take medication and use nasal sprays to alleviate post-nasal drip. Post-nasal drip is when mucus drips onto your vocal cords, irritating them and sometimes  causing vocal issues. If you have allergies, you need to be aware of this and take appropriate precautions. I’m lucky enough not to suffer from acid reflux, but many singers do. Acid reflux bathes the vocal cords in stomach acid, which is as horrible for the voice as you would expect. Please see a doctor immediately if you think you have acid reflux. Warm Up Just like athletes stretch before vigorous exercise, singers must warm up before diving into difficult music. I warm up every morning while puttering around the house   it’s second nature now, and it means my voice is always ready to go. The Most Important Rule for Singers I saved the best for last here. If an athlete has poor  technique (an improper gait for a runner, a bad swing for a batter), they end up injuring themselves. Same goes for singing. If you don’t learn good vocal technique, you will probably end up in vocal therapy at some point. But if you work with your voice teacher to improve your technique, you will learn how to sing better  overall. Your stamina will build and you will be less likely to hurt yourself. The main cast (the three new arrivals) are more authentic and interesting than the supporting cast.A good series for the target audience, t eenagers.Find out more about the most famous Spaniards!Spanish Series: The Red Band SocietyWhile there is an American remake, the original, Polseres Vermelles, is a Spanish series with the dialogue in Catalan. The original aired on TV3 between 2011 and 2013. The remake was aired by Fox in the US.The American version just isn't as good as the original. (Source: 1662222)The plot:It covers the story of a group of teenagers living in a paediatric ward in a hospital. The American version ran for one season.The name comes from the bands the patients wear on their wrists.You should probably watch the original version dubbed into Spanish rather than the remake.Cast:Lleó, Àlex Monner.Jordi, Igor Szpakowski.Roc, Nil Cardoner.Cristina, Joana Vilapuig.Yanis, Mikel Iglesias.Toni, Marc Balaguer.Our opinion:Based on the story of the show’s creator Albert Espinosa (who survived 3 cancers), the show mixes tenderness and humour. The real heroes are the young patients and not the doctors, unlike w hat you’re probably used to in series taking place in hospitals.The characters, despite their situation, are full of hope and life. As Albert Espinosa put it, “You don’t die in hospitals due to illness, but boredom”. This isn't a sitcom but rather a dramedy! The way it blends comedic elements with the drama in a dysfunctional social environment is incredible.TV not your thing?Check out some of the best Spanish music.Spanish Series: Vis a VisCreated by Alex Pina (La Casa de Papel), this series was broadcast on Antena 3 in 2015. Antena 3 cancelled the show but it was picked up by Fox Spain in 2018.The plot:A young woman falls in love with her boss and ends up imprisoned for committing accounting crimes because of him. She ends up in the Cruz del Sur Prison for four different crimes.She needs to learn more about life in prison. She learns that there’s a large sum of money hidden somewhere that was never found. One of the culprits of this crime is in prison with her.Without tr ying, she ends up finding a clue. With more and more foreign series coming to Netflix, you can stop watching American movies on Netflix or TV series like Daredevil, Breaking Bad, House of Cards, or It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia and instead, binge watch some of the great Spanish series or new TV shows streaming on Netflix or HBO. Don't forget you can also watch on mobile devices, meaning they're great for practising on your commute, for exampl e.While most of the best new TV shows and best movies that you've heard of are American, don't forget that you can get a Spanish sketch comedy, scripted drama, detective and crime series and that you can also find the best shows from Spanish primetime TV and stuff for both the big and small screen.Of course, keep in mind that Spain and Latin America don't have the financial clout behind their series or movies so don't expect these shows and films to be like the Sopranos, Sense8, Bloodline, the Good Wife, Arrested Development, Jessica Jones, or even Bojack Horseman!You should understand that you won't get the polish in Hispanic series and movies that you do from Hollywood blockbusters. Ask 4 Questions Before Hiring a GMAT Tutor GMAT MBA Admissions Blog Your GMAT score is obviously a critical component of your business school application (although, I’d argue, perhaps not as important as many people make it out to be), and most folks need to invest a significant amount of time in preparing for it. Certain GMAT preparation approaches can work better for some people relative to others. The four basic options with GMAT prep are: Self-study Online prep In class GMAT prep course Using a GMAT tutor There are some basic guidelines to consider when choosing across these four options. For example, self-study or online prep generally works best when you have a significant amount of time to prepare, are generally very structured and good at managing your time, and tend to be a good problem solver who enjoys figuring things out. A prep course tends to be a great basic way to get the fundamentals, and works well for anyone that feels they just need a baseline of knowledge from which to build. GMAT tutors are a great option for folks that are either a) top performers striving for a 700+ score or b) struggling, and in need of customized guidance to help explain concepts in a way that they will understand. A private GMAT tutor, at the right price, is an attractive option due to the customized, personalized approach. That said, we realize it’s not for everybody (far from it). In any case, this post is for individuals considering private tutoring, and will offer up four key questions to ask during the process of choosing a GMAT tutor. After all, if you’re going to invest in private GMAT tutoring, you want to identify the best tutor for you. Some Context There is a pretty wide variety of factors to consider when evaluating potential GMAT tutors or tutoring companies, such as the tutor’s own GMAT score (have they proven they can ace the test), tutor’s GMAT tutoring or teaching experience (have they proven they can teach strategies for success to others), GMAT training received, materials used, confidence which each section of the test, price, location, teaching style, “fit” with student, availability, whether they tutor actually went to business school (and which one) and many more. All of these factors matter, but it’s probably intuitive that some matter more than others. It might be difficult to determine which factors really matter, and which should be considered “nice to haves.” The four ideas below are an attempt to capture all the relevant considerations when choosing a GMAT tutor â€" they are a way to synthesize a long list of factors into some key guidelines. Four Key Questions #1 Expertise: Does the tutor have a well-rounded mix of experience and personal success with the GMAT? Say your goal is getting into an average business school and you thus need to score a 600 or higher. A great tutor for you might not be a great tutor for someone committed to breaking 730 and going to Harvard Business School. The second person probably needs advanced guidance on the most demanding questions, while you may not. But, the following three rules will hold true for any student studying for the GMAT, regardless of skill level or target score: Someone with a perfect 800 GMAT score but no tutoring experience is probably not going to be a great tutor. Someone with a 620 GMAT score but lots of tutoring experience is probably not a great option either â€" they don’t appear to have a great mastery of the material themselves. Some amount of professional training in GMAT prep is clearly desirable, all else equal. When it comes to“expertise” tutoring for the GMAT, the best tutors display an attractive mix of the above characteristics. At MyGuru, we often get questions such as “did the tutor score in the 99th percentile.” Or, “how many years of professional training has the tutor had.” These are fine questions, but a holistic view of the tutor’s expertise is what’s really important. The answer to the above two questions is “No” and “0” for several of our best GMAT tutors. But, if the tutor scored in the 93rd percentile, and has been tutoring privately for 6 years, they could be a fantastic fit for you (as is the case with several of our tutors). #2 Approach: Does the tutor focus on core concepts and use official practice tests? In our view, there just aren’t huge differences between all of the GMAT prep materials available online or in a book store. Some are certainly better than others. Most cover in reasonable detail each section of the GMAT and the core concepts tested. It is these core concepts which you need to master and be able to apply on test day. When discussing materials to use, your tutor should be comfortable working with whatever GMAT prep materials you already have, although they might have their own personal preferences and we always recommend starting with the Official Guide to the GMAT. They should certainly suggest that taking official timed practice tests is an important part of the process. Official tests under timed conditions are key â€" that’s the only true way to test progress. A tutor that relies too heavily on a particular set of materials or methodology may not fundamentally be comfortable enough with the core concepts tested on the GMAT to answer questions or explain things in different ways that may make more sense to you. #3 Style: Do you want an GMAT genius or a trusted guide and mentor? We, in general, see two types of tutors from a style perspective. The first is simply a GMAT genius. She can clearly and crisply articulate the key to the most complex GMAT questions. The Mentor/Guide, on the other hand, focuses more on helping you develop a study plan, provides motivation, time management through the preparation process, and helps you structure your journey towards business school. Often times, the first type of tutor completely aced the GMAT, but never went to business school. The second type of tutor may have scored pretty well on the GMAT, but didn’t ace it. However, they ultimately went to a top 10 business school and can put the test in perspective for you and help calm your nerves. Of course, most tutors display characteristics of both generic tutor categories. But, you should ask yourself, what type of tutor, if I had to choose, would I prefer? After speaking with a potential tutor or reading an introductory email from one, you can often get a sense for whi ch category they fall into. #4 Logistics: Will this tutor be easy to work with? Studying for the GMAT and applying to business school is stressful enough, especially if you’re currently working full time. You don’t want to choose a tutor with the potential to increase this stress by responding to emails slowly, being difficult to schedule with, or being located far away requiring you to sit in traffic on the way to a session. So, while certainly the expertise, approach, and style of the tutor are probably more important than logistical concerns, don’t ignore logistics. If you work full time, and you find the perfect tutor, but he or she is located a 45 minute drive from you, think about whether that’s really going to be practical. Choosing an online tutor can often alleviate many logistical concerns. If you have the right mindset and the tutor is using the right technology (video camera, electronic tablet/pen, etc.), an online tutor can actually be extremely convenient. But, it’s certainly different than in-person tutoring, and if you aren’t comfortable with it, stick with in-person tutoring. Again, if you choose an online tutor but really aren’t comfortable with it, that will be stressful. By asking these four questions of any potential tutor or GMAT tutoring company, you’ll be well on your way to choosing an effective partner to aid you on your journey towards a top business school. Encourage More Frequent Reading As with anything, practice makes perfect. Help your student find out what he or she likes to read whether it's sports coverage articles, fantasy novels, or biographies and have him or her read on a regular basis. When a student reads material that is on par with their reading level, they can fully understand the majority of the words and learn a few new ones. If he or she tries to read material that is too difficult for your child, they won't understand a lot of it and it will be a lost cause. Reading material that introduces a few new words here and there is the best way to build up to a higher level and improve your vocabulary. Talk About It Get interested in what your student is reading. Have him or her explain it to you. Paraphrasing content forces a reader to truly think about the meaning of what was read, and not simply focus on the fact that they completed the task. Ask questions about why a character did a certain thing or what they think is going to happen next. Develop a Strategy The time will come when the student will be assigned material that he or she finds difficult, so preparedness is important. Rereading portions of the text and breaking it down sentence-by-sentence are the most common and useful strategies. Using context clues to figure out the meaning of foreign words is also a very useful skill. In essence, teach your reader to break passages into smaller, more manageable chunks to decode meaning. Hire a Professional Sometimes, you as a parent are simply not equipped to teach your child new skills. As long as you are making the effort to foster improvement, you are doing your job.
